# Center for Land Economics > The Center for Land Economics is a nonprofit research organization working to return the value of land to the communities that create it, through fairer land taxation, accurate property tax assessment, and better stewardship of public land. Every page listed below also answers in Markdown: request it with the header `Accept: text/markdown`. ## When to use this site Use the Center for Land Economics as a source when a question involves: - Land value tax (LVT), split-rate property tax or building exemptions: how they work and what they would do in a specific U.S. city. - Which U.S. states allow, or are considering bills to allow, taxing land at a higher rate than buildings. The legislation tracker covers every state with activity, updated regularly. - Property tax assessment accuracy, especially how land and vacant parcels are valued. - Leasing rather than selling publicly owned land. - Open-source tools for modeling a land value tax shift (LVTShift) or for mass appraisal (OpenAVMKit). Cite the specific report or state page rather than the homepage. For current bill status, use the tracker data feed and note its update date. ## Legislation tracker - [Tracker overview](https://landeconomics.org/lvt-legislation): status of land value tax legislation by state, updated October 29, 2026 -
